Closely kick-out of Agora building

Our brave and hard working Agora organisers from AEGEE-Aachen solved a highly dangerous situation on friday afternoon! What happened? During the trainings sessions, workshop sessions and progress meetings it happened that alcohol was consumed during a progress meeting. Drinking started before the meeting began and was discovered by the caretaker of the university building. Since alkohol is forbidden to drink in university buildings in Germany, the caretaker wanted to kick us all out of the building!! Due to enormous efforts of AEGEE-Aachen, this catastrophe was luckily prevented! (THANK YOU Guys!!!). It was a huge shock and an entirely delicate situation for us all, because there was no other option to assamble and the Agora would had its end friday evening. Hopefully, the concerned people expressed their apologies for their behaviour.

Questions on Activity Reports: General impression

A general impression during the Agora was to see when the network had the time to ask questions on Activity Reports of European bodies. The CD, working groups, commissions, liasion officers: they all received a manageable amount of questions. There was the impression that the represantative from Facebook got more questions, than were asked upon activity reports.

Hardly questions on Activity Plan 2008/09

During the first plenary session thursday morning at Aachen University, the Activity plan of the new Comité Directeur was presented as well as the pas activites of the new elected CD since they started their work in the house in Brussels. When we all had the opportunity to ask questions on the activity plan which is planned for 2008/09, only two members of our association took the chance to ask questions upon it. One was especially dedicated to the new webpage of AEGEE and its communication towards european bodies in this issue. As some of you know there were plenty of emails exchanged on this topic already before the Agora started.

Presentation of Facebook

Friday afternoon we had the pleasure to welcome a representative of Facebook, Javian Oliver. After a short and precies presentation about the mission and vision, the Agora audience had the change to ask questions. Interesting topics were raised such as tracing back your profile for applications, facebook as workplace, security aspects and future ideas to improve this social tool. Javian and his collegue answered all questions and listened attentively to new ideas. We had the pleasure to meet both representatives again during the European Night.

Bi-lingual candidature presentation

The Agora witnessed a bilingual candidature presentation during the presentation round of the candidatures for the Audit Commission of AEGEE. The presentation from Nico Huurman was presented in english and french to the audience. This was a refreshing and unexpected moment for the association, so to see from the reaction from the audience. Using english and french is perfectly fine for AEGEE, since these are the two official languages of AEGEE. What about more french language courses in the future? Maybe during a Summer University or as a normal event? Think about it ;-)

New guiding concept: walking buses

Walking what? Yip, that is what we thought too ;-) What is behind the system of the walking buses, so? These are nice and hard working people who are guiding the participants of the Agora to the gyms after the party, for example. These walking buses going regularly during the night, being staffed with a sign stating the number of the gym. And still we often hear of people who still get lost and enjoy a lovely night walk through Aachen. We heard even rumors or people who failed to find the way and after giving up, they took a taxi and slept the night in the hotel......

Changing rooms

During this Agora in Aachen, no day looks like the same. This is not due to the changing Agenda every here and then, but also due to the fact that we change rooms and buildings on a daily basis. Again, the city map from the welcome package helps a lot and we are guided very well thanks to wheather resistant (rain!!) signs.

Opening Ceremony

Evening... Rain... A crowd of AEGEE people gathering in the City Hall... Better to see than to read...

Gym division - dont forget your number

During our general assembly we are used to stay in one big gym. Or in a big one and a small one, maybe. This Agora we stay in not one gym, not two gyms, no, we stay in seven gyms, which are distributd all around the center of Aachen. Among our standard equipment for each day, naturally, we all keep our city map :-) Luckily in this city map we find all locations marked on the map. Still, for some people that does not help
at all and they discover Aachen by night rather unvoluntarily ;-)

AGORA. First Impressions

AEGEE-Aachen decided to leave their trace in memory of AEGEE members. They decided to make an unforgettable Agora with the best possible organization and lodging. During the beginning of October 700 AEGEE members had an opportunity to check the efforts of AEGEE-Aachen. So far everything started a bit mixed and perplex, strangely for German antenna, but later on the mess got some structure. Let me start from the very beginning…
Agora participants gathered in an auditorium of the Aachen technical university after wondering around in the search of the appropriate building of the university. At least the group from the most overcrowded VIP gym No.2 lost its “walking bus” (a person that leads participants to plenary, gyms and other important places) this is why it had a morning unguided tour in the very heart of Aachen. Yes, everything is concentrated in the centre, but there are 7 gyms and the plenary and workshops are held not only in different rooms of the university, but in different buildings. Although Aachen is full of pointers on the poles and people with pointers to the workshops and the canteen, participants still manage to get lost. This is just some street magic of Aachen…

The first session started traditionally with solemn speeches by Dragan Stojanovski, the President of AEGEE-Europe, and Anita Bosneva, responsible for cooperation with externals, followed by welcome word from one of the Agora-Aachen organizers Patrick Kabasci. Later the WGs and locals presented themselves. Although most of antennae seemed to sleep, the Spanish and German ones tried to activate the environment with shouts and songs.
Later on ratification of the Agenda came and ratification of the minutes of the latest Agoras and EBM were presented. Next the CD presented its report. According to Dragan, this CD should be a revolution one, as its activities involve a lot of changes and this is the 1st CD that will serve for 12 month. Every CD member was very enthusiastic and positive towards his/her future activities… AEGEE believes in its success and wishes the CD all the best. The first part of the day was closed by 2 prytania session and several workshops.

AEGEE Cafe

October 1, 2008

The first ‘zero’ day of the Agora started with language courses and family-type AEGEE-Café during which AEGEE-Europe presented CD, working groups and current projects. There were not many visitors as the people were keeping on arriving and only those who arrived earlier that day and were not tired managed to come to the Café.
The representatives of the projects and working groups were also wondering around the Café, as the coordinator asked them to move from one table to another… This did not work out with everybody, but still some movement created the vision of some activity going on more exciting than it was.
Overall, the Café was successful, as the interested AEGEE members had a possibility to see AEGEE-Europe in real life and address their request directly to them.

Publications at the Agora

At the Agora, there will be a lot to take with you: not only great memories but also a couple of brandnew and helpful publications for you and your local Antenna!
For example, the CD will publish the new edition of the AEGEE Members Manual (AMM), which gives every member of AEGEE a brief but broad overview about the organisation! Updated by Stefan Wittwer, former Network Director of the CD, the brandnew edition will be in your hands soon!
Besides that, you will get the unique chance to grap one edition of a manual published by the "YOUrope needs YOU" project. This manual will enable you to lead interactive workshops at high schools within the framework of the "YOUrope needs YOU" project!
And last but not least, you will enjoy reading the latest edition of the AEGEE members magazine "News Bulletin" containing all hot news and stories from the network! Everyone should have one ;-)

Spring Agora Ljubljana 2008: New Activities from Training Sessions to Progress Meetings, by Maria Morozova

There were two new activities on the agenda of the Spring Agora Ljubljana 2008 in addition to the plenary, workshops and prytania sessions. These were training sessions and progress meetings. In order to get a personal insight in what was happening during training sessions as well as the new introduced progress meetings I made an interview with Tika Tsertsvadze, Vice President of AEGEE-Europe 2007-2008 who lead some of these new activities.

Maria (M): What is the main idea behind these training sessions?
Tika(T): The idea is to have an external for the AEGEE members. Although the idea did not work for this Agora, we hope that at the next Agora it will work. For the training session we invited companies for the members of AEGEE to meet them directly and the companies to advertise themselves and to open up us.

M: How do you evaluate the trainings, namely your training “Youth in Action”?
(T): My training was quite ok… I cannot evaluate my training (smiles). At the end of the workshop we had a case work and all the proposals were good, so I proposed them to develop it into the real project and to submit it within one week to me, so that we can introduce at the end of debate at least 2 or 3 of the proposals to the project.

M: Next to the training session, there were also progress meetings. Can you give us your impression from the part you let?
(T): Except for the trainings there are also progress meetings. I was at one of the progress meetings on the strategic planning, because we are preparing it. The aim of the progress meeting was to involve and to start consultation now. I had one group and it was quite productive to receive the feedback from them how it was done for EBM in Delft. I give this feedback to some people to develop it now. The feedback was critical but constructive, so that is something to be taken into consideration.

M: Is it possible to make trainings during the next Agora?
(T): We hope for the next Agora to get guests like companies, commissions and the institutions and I think we will continue to do so, because it is good for our members to meet those ‘high level’ people personally and to discuss with them personally. The companies liked the idea and they think they will come. Another reason we had this is that if the Microsoft or any other company would come we will finally manage to make FR, because they will promote themselves here among 1000 people.

Update: Result of the flag stealing

During the Agora, AEGEE-Ljublana as well as AEGEE-Europe became victims of the tradional flag stealing.
Messages from the two different flag-stealing teams arrived and then the final moment came when AEGEE-Ljubljana and AEGEE-Europe had to fulfill a small task to get their flag back.

AEGEE-Ljubljana had to have three staff-t-shirts which they printed or the Spring Agora for themselves, to the blackmailing team.
AEGEE-Europe, however, had to change their places in the plenary with our fellow members from AEGEE-Delft. They again choose the position on the first row as always, however, due to archictonical circumstances, their view was somehow narrowed and it was not possible to sit face to face to the chair table.

So, in the end, the flags are given back and we all had some fun!

In case you plan to act as a flag-stealer in the future, please first refer to the rules of correct flag-stealing before getting into action! Because, maybe one day you are also a victim of it and then you would also love that the thiefs stick to certain rules ;-)

Ljubljana vs. Valetta

Each Agora is unique. Nevertheless, in order to evaluate what is going on during an Agora one should compare it to another one. So, let me turn back to spring Agora 2007 in Valetta and compare the Agora in Valetta to the Agora in Ljubljana to see what changed in one year and what tendencies are there in place. The comparison is based on the content and the participants of the Agorae. I will present you now some opinions of old AEGEE members:

Patrick Hanckmann, AEGEE-Academy

Patrick’s view upon the Agorae in Ljubljana and in Valetta was relatively neutral. He said that the content and the election procedure of both Agorae were similar. Concerning people, Patrick has noticed that there are more ‘older’ and more experienced AEGEE members in Ljubljana compared to Valetta. This means that more experienced people can work well, which was proved by good, high level and relevant questions to the commissions and the candidates.
Patrick stressed that the current Agora in Ljubljana was much more interesting. Valetta did not have the re-opening of the Comite Directeur (CD) candidates list, which is not the best practice according to Patrick.

Still, it was people’s choice and it just happened so. Although there was a reform of CD cycle in Valetta, Ljubljana wins in the regard of CD issue as it was “more extreme with the CD in Ljubljana” according to Patrick.

Wiebke Hahn, Former Comite Directeur

Wiebke compared mostly about people, motivation and general content of the Agorae: “I had an impression that Valetta was a big boost of motivation for many people, but, unfortunately I couldn't see this here in Ljubljana with the people. The organization has been working well, but especially the CD was at the top of checking situation."
"Concerning content, this [Agora Ljubljana] was a nice project. People were happy with the agenda, the training sessions and the progress meetings. Concerning proposals, this time it was not as radical as in Valetta with the change of the CD cycle, but you cannot reinvent something every year. The audience was a little bit confused, it’s not really possible to solve the confusing”.

Thijs Huijbers (Fish), DWG, AEGEE-Groningen:

The Fish was mostly informal in his evaluation and he concentrated more on the people and their behaviour. The Fish started with the very beginning – the selection procedure. As it was quite hard due to the limited number of places, people who were not selected also had hard time in Ljubljana by trying to register.

In general, Agora in Valetta was easier to organize, as Thijs states. He further points out that in Ljubljana people were much more stressed because of the schedule and time pressure, as everybody had to get up early (6:30) to get from the gym to the plenary that was located outside Ljubljana.

Thijs also mentioned the CD candidates were better in Valetta, but Agora in Ljubljana was more exciting in this regard.

Theijs van Welij, former President AEGEE-Europe

Theijs called the Agora in Ljubljana "the Agora of innovation."
He stated that “The biggest difference with Agora Valetta is that at that time [spring 2007] the proposal to change the CIA was mutually prepared, while what the European Board Meeting discussed there was a discussion of the statutory reform, but what has been done creates a lot of confusion”.
Theijs found a similarity between these two Agorae: they both were really hectic. Concerning the content, Theijs found it very nice, as there were many workshops and the new projects. “At the Agora in Ljubljana it was made a nice progress in being very active, and being very innovative”, Theijs continued.
Further comments of Theijs concern the procedure: “Valetta a year ago was a mess and this Agora is also a mess. What you see here is that the basic information the CD needs to provide to the Agora two weeks in advance has not happened. As the confusion is bigger here, in Ljubljana, better organization of procedure was in Valetta”.
Finally Theijs recognized that "the organizers here, in Ljubljana, put much more effort than the organizers in Valetta to make a nice Agora, but they managed pretty well”.

Theijs had the greatest European night and in general he is very satisfied with the Agora in Ljubljana.

No matter the agenda, each Agora has holds something unexpected for its participants. We had some surprises in Ljubljana too, but we managed to end up happily 3 full days of plenaries, workshops, prytania sessions, training session, progress meetings and of course parties.

We are looking forward to Fall AGORA 2008 in Aachen,

Current activities of AEGEE members during plenary

Since the AGORA is the General Assembly of AEGEE the main activities of the participants should be …

… paying attention on slideshows and the presentations !!

But it’s all about intercultural differences as we all know :) . Let’s take a look at what the AEGEE members are doing in Ljubljana:

… taking pictures…

… counting money …

... meeting old friends and crying one on another …

… curiously reading the new edition of Key to Europe…

… discussing with the other fans of Netherlands National football??? …

… playing with balloons…

… giving massage sessions…

... confusing the plenary room with the seaside :) …

… taking a well-deserved rest…

… or … hardly working for M(eye) AGORA – the official news blog of AGORA Ljubljana (by chatting on Yahoo Messenger :) )…

Shall we continue ?!?

Team or Tim ?

Wow! Thursday was already a quite strong first day of the Agora! Difficult questions, sentiments, provocations, strong statements, locals unsure of what is going on or what is going to happen. Financial Director of AEGEE-Europe Tim Klifman had to face a lot of criticism. CD looked unsure for a moment …

The ones who believe that after the storm there is always sunshine were once more right. Speculations were around, with locals being approached on Wednesday and deciding for a vote of confidence. The whole plenary was ready to face the best and the worst scenario. Solution finally came from the inside. CD decided to give it another try as a team. The AGORA which earlier yesterday has given a positive vote for the Activity report of the CD, decided not to put forward the Vote of Confidence for Tim Klifman. That decision was partially a result of some CD meetings during the Thursday morning plenary and consultation with some old and experienced members as our sleepless reporters managed to find out.

On the other side of the plenary the current candidates were preparing for their afternoon presentations. After Thursdays’ happenings, more people decided to take the difficult decision and run for the most neuralgic body of our Association the CD.

Dragan Stojanovski (AEGEE-Nis), current Projects Director ran for the President position while Kay Lieker (AEGEE-Maastricht) and Robin Verchuren (AEGEE-Leuven), applying for President before the AGORA made a last moment decision to run for members of the CD together with Anita Bosneva (AEGEE-Sofia).

Ivonne Van Den Berg (AEGEE-Leiden) ran for Financial Director position, as she had applied before the initial deadline, as well as Anita. Percin Imrek (AEGEE-Canakkale) and Tena Prelec (AEGEE-Trieste) ran for the position of member of the CD while Evren Erdener went for the Secretary General position (AEGEE-Ankara), all of them showing up on the last moment => somewhere from the back of the plenary a voice was heard: ’you can’t teach an old association new tricks’.

Final episode of the day was a speech-apology and at the same time promise to improve the financial management of AEGEE presented by the CD which was received with great relief from the AGORA.

AEGEE-Rodos signing the Convention d’Adhesion rounded up a tiring, but still very interesting day with a smile.

Candidatures for the Comite Directeur of AEGEE Europe

In the afternoon, the candidatures for the Comite Directeur started.

For the Member of the Comite Directeur: (4 members to be elected)
Anita Bosneva
Percin Imrek
Kay Lieker
Tena Prelec
Robin Verschuren

For the Financial Director of AEGEE Europe
Ivonne Van Den Berg

For the Secretary-General of AEGEE Europe
Evren Erdener

For the President of AEGEE Europe
Dragan Stojanovski

After the presentation of the candidatures, we had a looong line of people that wanted to ask questions. Since they were too many and the time was very tight, we had to postpone a big part of the questions for tomorrow morning, including the ones for the President of AEGEE Europe.

But, for the moment, we would like to give you a few of the most interesting questions.

Question: For Kay, which position are you candidating for?
Kay: Network officer.

Question: For Kay, please comment on the fact that you are still a member of AEGEE Maastricht!
Kay: Network officer

Question: Did you, and if yes, how did you communicate with the current CD members, which position you are taking?
Robin: I have been in contact with Laure, but not that much.
Anita: I have been working with Tika for CST Iceland.
Kay: I had few contacts with Stephan (EBM&this agora)

Question: To Kay, could you tell us 3 points which make you the best candidate, task-related experience?
Kay: I like to be in contact with the network and to listen for the others.
Last comment: I would have preferred listening something about cooperation with the bodies

Question: For Robin, why did you change your candidature after Dragan announced his?
Robin: I think that two are better than one, no matter the positions.

Question: For Robin and Tena, do you think that is practical to replace the entire website?
Robin: Not all of it……
Tena: I want to improve the part about Human Resources.

We will be back with more news soon,

Wouter Van Den Broek
Manos Valasis

Last but not least, for Secretary of the Agora - Carlijn van de Meulenhof

After this long round of candidatures we had an even longer one for questions. We will present you a few of the most „disputed” answers.

For the Network Commission
Question: For Francesco, we know you candidated for president and now you are candidating for the Network Commission. Do you have any specific objective or do you just want a European position?
Francesco: I first candidated for President, because I saw only very inexperienced people candidating, but then yesterday when I saw the candidature of Dragan I left the place and now I am going for the NetCom.

Question: The question goes to Francesco - could you tell me if you have a specific plan for your part of the network?
Francesco: My plan includes: connecting all the antennae, the same thing as I aimed as a subcommie and to develop more and more activities.
Last comment: Having in mind your lack of involvement on the European level of AEGEE, I wish you the experience and knowledge to do it.

Question: My question goes to Agnes, Nikola, and Wouter – I have seen that you have written on you presentation that you want to get active on the European level, my question is why do you go for the Network Commission? If you just want to go for the European level, Why do you not consider a WG or a project as a starting point ??
Nikola: I like to be the exception that confirms the rule.
Wouter: I consider that I have the necessary experience for a netcommie.
Agnes: Since I have joined AEGEE, I have been to a lot of events, therefore I know many people around my area, which are board members of their locals so they will represent my contacts during my term.
Last comment: I am looking forward to a good cooperation, especially when concerning PRWG.

Question: For Wouter and Nikola, could give us a concrete reason why we should vote for you?
Wouter: I will take some visits to Great Britain to see if I can help them become active on the European level of AEGEE.
Nikola: Just two words, the Danube project.

For the Audit Comission:
Question:
For Tunca, I have seen in your presentation that you have a lot of experience in business field, but no experience in NGOs, how are you going to match these two?
Tunca: The finances, money stuff and the finance programme is the same, it doesn’t matter if it is for a company or for an NGO.

At the moment, we are waiting for the afternoon plenary to start.

We are looking forward to the candidatures for the Comite Directeur this afternoon.

Mediterranean part of Thursday night

Yesterday some of us weren’t too sure if the party would be a success …

First of all we had already been warned that the location would be half outside and the yesterday weather was … let’s say “unstable”. As concerning the location, we had to stay in the same place we usually have meals – a small court behind the plenary building. Next to a café, several tents were set up together with a small amount of chairs and tables. It was hard to imagine this “cafeteria” as the location for an AEGEE party, but after some Mediterranean redecoration of the place (party lights, palm trees, volley balls, sun-hats, sunglasses, life-buoys that were laying into a small pool and some others things) the party started.

The two dance floors (an inside and an outside one) with two different types of music quickly filled and the organized limbo dance completed the party atmosphere. Not even a short power failure in the outer area could stop us: we just went on singing and dancing!

After the second party of Spring AGORA Ljubljana we showed that AEGEE parties are not called great parties because of the locations or the cheap drinks, but because of the AEGEE wonderful people!!

Mysterious flag stealing during Agora

Of that what all locals affraid of happened also here at this Agora: flag stealing!!

The first public victim is –guess what- the Agora organising local: AEGEE-Ljubljana. During the open call in the morning plenary some brave Agora-participants took the flag while AEGEE-Ljubljana was presenting to the plenary. No chance for the Slovenian members to react that fast as the flag ran away.

The blackmailing team sent a message in the afternoon stating that a team is taking good care of the AEGEE-Ljubljana flag and that this service will be paid.

We will be keeping you updated about the latest developments in this exiciting case.

In the end we have a short note: also the flag of AEGEE-Europe is a victim of the blackmailing-team...

PRWG Speaker

The Candidatures for President of AEGEE-Europe have just been re-open!!

Today, because Dragan Stojanovski announced his intention of candidating for the position of President of AEGEE-Europe, the Juridical Comission proposed the reopening of the candidatures.

Of course, all this was possible after the already announced candidates expressed their opinion and after a roll call of all the antennae and working groups. The results were more than clearly stated: 89,25% in favour!!

Therefore, the candidatures of President of AEGEE-Europe are open until Thursday morning, at 9.00 AM.

Wednesday morning plenary

Due to the very early start in the morning (the wake-up time is 6,30!) Agora participants seemed to sleep on their way to the university where the plenary takes place, so that the Opening Plenary started one hour later. Anyway, after fitting into all available and unavailable places, Agora participants settled down and the Opening Plenary started. Traditionally, the President of AEGEE-Europe presented AEGEE and its key goals and values in both English and French languages. Then, the main organizer of Agora in Ljubljana, Petra and the official guest from university greeted everybody at Agora.

Further, the most interesting part started. On the Agenda list it is called just “Attendance List”, but in reality it is much more. Each antenna and contact antenna present had to show up, but it is very amazing how each local does this. Some locals sing short songs, some cry out slogans or blow the whistles. AEGEE-Oviedo even bought a bagpipe. In some cases it was not clear who represents which antenna, as in some cases the same people showed up for several antennae. For example, a group of the same Spanish people cried or sang something when the names of AEGEE-Oviedo, AEGEE-Santander and AEGEE-Valencia were named. The Spanish people did not have enough of that. When AEGEE-Ljubljana was named J. from Santander decided to thank the organizers in a strange way. He just stole their flag, so that AEGEE-Ljubljana has to solve this problem to get their flag back. One can really wonder what AEGEE-Ljubljana guys will have to do to get their flag back.

Later on the agenda of the Agora was presented and it was announced that the minutes from Agora Eskisehir 2008 and EBM Delft 2008 will be postponed for May 2. Still, everything else went according to the Agenda. So, the CD presented their activity report which provoked a number of questions among the audience. The most of the questions were about the finances and travel reimbursement costs, as well as about more specific plans of the CD for the nearest future. The Opening Plenary ended with a number of announcements, namely presentation of the more specific agenda for May 1 and safety instructions for the Agora participants.

First party SNOW HEAT – served chilled

Agora, as most of AEGEE-events combines both official and unofficial parts. The first day of Agora in Ljubljana was not an exception. After the official opening ceremony and snack and vine tasting finished, the guards of the venue kindly asked the participants of Agora to leave the place. But AEGEE-Ljubljana did not let people get lost in the night streets of the city, but kindly invited everybody to the Bachus Center for the very spring party “Snow Heat”. The name of the party could be discovered on a nice cardboard snowman with a hole instead of face for everybody to put his/her face inside the hole and make a picture. Moreover, there were lots of AEGEE people wearing winter hats in order to correspond to the unofficial dress-code of the party. There were also cases of other dress code, mostly AEGEE-special dress code, such as orange costumes and boas of the Dutch locals.

Indeed, it was pretty hot inside, especially on the underground floor. Maybe, it was due to the volcano of positive emotions, warm hugs with friends whom people haven’t seen for ages or just because of the hot AEGEE-spirit. Nobody knows how, but AEGEE magic worked out perfectly. Despite being tired after the way to Ljubljana or sleepless nights at the pre-events in Maribor and Trieste the Agora participants made the party burst out with real heat of positive emotions and true AEGEE-spirit!

At the very beginning people were just wondering around and chilling out before the start of the real party… After 10 p.m. the Bachus Center turned out to be a really mysterious dance place, as everybody went to the dance floors, which turned out to have enough place for more than 600 Agora participants and organizers… The very distinct feature of the party was the ‘migration’ process between the dance floors. When it became almost impossible to dance on one floor, but only move in the rhythm of music people moved to another dance floor which was also getting overcrowded with some time, so that people had to migrate elsewhere… At least, people were not staying at one place and had the possibility to meet more old friends and make the new ones.

Generally, it was a great start and Agora participants are looking forward towards continuation of informal part of Agora.

Will there be even more heating tonight?

First impression of the AGORA place ....

From all over Europe AEGEEans came to Ljubljana –well, not really to Ljubljana, but Medvode, a small town about 30minutes to the north that has a huge advantage: THE GYM !!

Approaching Medvode, passing green fields, getting stuck behind trucks and literally smelling the agriculture, the question comes up „Are we going to the AGORA or to AgraGORA??”. But as soon as we reach the gym the situation is clear and the spirit of AEGEE grasps us all. Lots of other AEGEEans and especially the organisers of AEGEE Ljubljana (in easy-to-spy green T-shirts that say „I am too busy ... ask him -> .... or her <-”) , met us in the organised chaos of registering and finding a place in the gym. Thanks to a perfectly designed pattern of sleeping slots and gangways taped on the floor, everyone is soon settled and the fun can begin.

But our gym also hides some surprises for us: a shriek in a washing-room indicates another person who learned his lesson: he has walked too far backwards from the sink and got right into the region of the shower-sensor, that sends a spill of warm water over his back.

More details will be coming soon about the university and the plenary room ....

Opening Ceremony of Spring AGORA 2008 in Ljubljana

The Spring AGORA 2008 in Ljubljana was opened by Veronika Zagar, the president of AEGEE Ljubljana, who came on stage and gave a nice speech about the European Identity of AEGEE.

Then the Mayor of Ljubljana, Zoran Jankovic, spoke us about the city of Ljubljana, which he mentioned as the most beautiful city in the world (!!) and also talked about environmental issues and how the environment should be carefully sustained.

After this nice speech, the representative of European Commission talked about the importance of intercultural dialogue and the European Unity, and of course AEGEE’s contributions to it.

Whilst the contribution of the University of Ljubljana cannot be denied, the Pro-Rector of the University of Ljubljana, Dr. Ivan Svetlik, came up and delivered a nice speech about the University of Ljubljana itself, the activities of the university and how it supports such successful organizations. At the end he declared his sadness about the lack of intercultural communication and how AEGEE contributes to this subject.

The last speaker, Laure Onidi, president of AEGEE Europe, came up and shared her ideas and comments about AEGEE’s successes, present activities, but most of all future plans.

The ceremony ended with the great folk show of the “White Angels” who entertained us with their nice songs and dances, which were unique for most of the participants. The ceremony was closed after this lovely show, and the participants got the chance to taste the nice wines and the food at the reception. The outdoor reception with the theme of “AGORA Airlines” offered a good
service to their customers with pretty stewardesses.
